Starting a home renovation can be overwhelming, so here's how we simplified it to your advantage.

When we were forced to stay home during the pandemic, one of the things that kept us busy was making over our living spaces. It is after all the best time to clean, rennovate, and even remodel one's home.

For some, it's an easy process but for others, it's a difficult task to undertake. To help you with your do-it-yourself (DIY) home makeovers, here are a few tips from GMA Lifestyle.

1. Search for your inspiration

Unless you finished a course in interior design, it would really be overwhelming to plot your own concept. The next best thing is to familiarize yourself with the basics of design. One of the easiest ways to do this is to binge-watch home remodeling shows online like YouTube and Netflix.

Anyone can find inspiration online regardless of personal taste and aesthetic. Save photos, bookmark videos, and look for helpful blogs.

The best way to start your remodeling journey is to create a mood board. Pick the colors you like, the furniture, fabric, etc. and your design will all come together in one cohesive plan.

2. Know what to keep

Before tearing down the house and throwing anything, choose the items you want to keep. If you live with your partner or your family, ask what they want to keep as well.

Keep things that go with your new design, items that go well with that mood board. If some of the items don't match your design, you can always upcycle or keep it as they are and make your space more personal.

Keeping what you can will not only save you money but it will also make your new home still feel familiar in spite of the change.

3. Ask an expert

The truth is, you can't DIY everything. Well, you really can, since there are a lot of available tutorials online. But leave the bigger tasks to experts like plumbing and electrical work. You need experts for these things.

It's a must that you ask--hire them if necessary--the experts for their opinions since remodeling your home involves a lot of technical skill, too.

4. Set a budget

How much are you willing to put off to set-up that aesthetic home? Where do you plan to chop off that budget?

Be clear about the budget because remodeling your home isn't cheap. Unless you plan to do all the work and scavenge the materials from who-knows-where, you're going to spend money.

It's also best to stay within budget because of the pandemic, an emergency fund must still be prioritized. Do not spend everything on the remodeling.

5. Build a timeline

When do you plan to finish your new home? Is it an urgent thing or is it just something you want to satisfy your aesthetic goals?

Create your timeline and decide on how long you want the remodeling to take place. This is crucial, especially if you live in the home you want to remodel. You can't just demolish everything right away unless you plan to spend the next few months in a hotel room or your friend's place.
