EXCLUSIVE: Mcoy Fundales shares how he finds inspiration in writing
If you're a songwriter and have ever felt like you're stuck in a rut when it comes to writing songs then maybe composer, writer, and director Mcoy Fundales can help you out.
In his recent contract signing with AltG Records, the singer-songwriter shares his secret to turning his favorite hobby into a successful career.
“Chismoso ako at observant ako,” he admits.
“So I draw inspiration from everyday people at mga experiences tulad ng mga nakakausap ko. So, if I talk to you and if I observe you, most likely kung hindi 'yan script sa Pepito [Manaloto], malamang ikaw na ang susunod na subject ng susunod na kanta ko.”
Aside from being observant, Mcoy adds that writing stems from his love to tell stories.
“I never stopped writing. Kaya ako na in-love sa pagsusulat ng script e. Kasi I love telling stories at mahilig akong magkwento.
“When I first started with the band [Orange and Lemons], I thought of telling stories through songs. So that's what I did before. Kaya lang when you're a songwriter, you're only limited to two to three and a half minutes of material. Challenging kasi I have to tell my story and my thoughts in three verses, one chorus.
“So nung natuto akong magsulat ng script, sumobrang laya ako. I have like 25 sequences at my disposal to tell my story eh 'yun 'yung masarap sa akin.
“Now, I've been writing for 6 years and I'm learning to direct na rin.
“Eh since music naman ako nagsimula at napapasulat naman ako, I might as well get back to music.”
So now that he's officially back in the industry, the Pepito Manaloto writer admits he has only recently listened to music produced by millennials through the help of his daughter.
“I have to admit na recently ko lang tinanong 'yung anak ko kung ano 'yung uso ngayon. So she sent me a playlist ng mga current songs. And ang galing sobra.
“I mean, most impressive sa akin is marami akong narinig na homemade 'yung recording at very indie.
“Noong time namin you really need a recording studio to create an output like that.”
And what are his first impressions?
“I have to admit na ang impression ko is puro hugot. 'Yun ang issue ngayon at 'di ko rin alam kung bakit ganun 'yung batch ng mga musicians ngayon.
“I wish bumalik 'yung mga happier songs naman. Or a sad song disguised as a happy one. A beautiful melody but with an emotional lyric. I think that would work.”
Catch Mcoy's new single “Bakit Kita Hahabulin?” under AltG Records this coming May 31st.
