The Blood Type Diet: What foods you should eat to lose weight
In 1996, naturopathic physician Peter D'Adamo published a book titled 'Eat Right for Your Type.' This book gave birth to what is now known as the Blood Type Diet.
As the name suggests, the Blood Type Diet is hinged around the theory that there are certain types of foods ideal for each blood type, because they can digest these foods better.
According to Dr. D'Adamo in his 2017 interview with CT Style, there has been an evolution of information that prompted him to revise and update the book in 2016.
“It has the new information on the microbiome, which is your bugs inside of human stuff, which blood type apparently controls as well.
“And it turns out that things like the bugs inside of us have preferences for blood types.
“Foods react chemically with the blood types depending upon which ones are in your digestive tract.
“So, it's really, I guess a sort of an inner guide to a sort of blueprint.”
So, how effective is the Blood Type diet? Dr. D'Adamo said, “Well, typically, if you're healthy, the changes will be slight and slow.
“However, people with digestive problems, allergies, immune issues, and stuff, generally see very substantial and rapid changes.”
So, without further ado, below are the recommended weight loss foods for each blood type, according to the book, 'Eat Right for Your Type'.

Notice how wheat and corn are present in all blood types' must-avoid foods? It's because wheat and corn by-products are two of the key weight-gaining foods, especially for blood types O and A.
Also, most low-calorie diet bars and shakes have whey and corn-derived ingredients in them, which can have a number of bad effects for blood type O people:
- Bloating caused by inflammation of digestive tract lining, which also interferes with your digestive process
- Slower food metabolism rate and not being able to efficiently burn calories for energy
- Compromises insulin production
- Hormonal imbalance, which consequently causes water retention, thyroid disorders, and other problems
If you have an underlying medical condition, it's best to consult a registered nutritionist or dietician before trying the Blood Type Diet or any other diet plan, so they can ensure that it is suited for your current health situation.
