Celebrities diagnosed with hypothyroidism
Some individuals are having a hard battle when it comes to losing weight, especially if they were diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
According to my.clevelandclinic.org, Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid disease) is a condition that happens when your thyroid gland doesn't make or release enough hormone into your bloodstream. As a result, your metabolism slows down. This can cause unintentional weight gain and make you feel exhausted all the time.
If left untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to death.
Several celebrities have opened about this condition including Kapuso Primetime Goddess Carla Abellana and recently 24-year-old Cassy Legaspi, the daughter of Carmina Villarroel and Zoren Legaspi.
Check out the other showbiz personalities who shared their stories of dealing with this condition in this gallery.
Carla Abellana
'Widows' War' star Carla Abellana talked about her struggle for half a decade after being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in her Instagram post in September 2024.
Sharing a carousel of photos of her, she wrote, “Hypothyroidism has been the bane of the past 5 years of my life. My hormones were nowhere within normal range, cortisol level was extremely high for so long, I was practically perimenopausal at 37 years of age, and despite fasting (more like starving myself already), along with regular and stringent workouts, i was still gaining weight constantly.”
Carla condition
Carla admitted that she would feel insecure whenever she sees other people who are fit. But she also knows that with the right mindset and focus, there is a way to manage hypothyroidism.
She stressed, “So just like a lot of you, I also see photos of other people who are so fit and I can't help but feel insecure. I also wish weight loss would work like magic, but NO. It really doesn't. There really is no shortcut. Having Hypothyroidism is a pain in the butt because there is no cure for it, but there is a way. It may not be the same for all of us, but there really is a way.
Bea Alonzo
Multi-awarded actress and endorser Bea Alonzo revealed on her vlog in April 2023 that she is also one of those diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and that explains her weight gain.
“Aside from having PCOS [polycystic ovary syndrome], I recently was diagnosed with hypothyroidism so that's the reason behind my gaining weight,”
Bea condition
Instead of feeling discouraged about her condition, Bea has been taking steps to address it.
She explained in her vlog, “I'm trying to address it now by working out, by dieting and taking meds for it and supplements. So wish me luck, sana matapos na siya.
“So mga nagsasabi diyan, bakit ang taba na daw ni Bea, yun po yung reason. Pasensya na kayo,”

The Kapamilya actress in May 2023 told PEP.PH in an interview that she doesn't mind people calling her “fat.”
“I have hypothyroidism. I have no gallbladder. Losing weight is a lot harder for me than it is for other people.” Ria said.
"So, go ahead. Call me fat. Anong magagawa ninyo? I'm sick with stuff I can't fix. So, sino ka diyan?"
Early that year, she was launched as calendar girl of a liquor brand.
Shaina Magdayao
Kapamilya talent Shaina Magdayao even went on a hiatus in 2016 after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2014 that led to her “weight gain” and was “prone to injuries.”
Shaina condition
Dealing with her health condition was not a “walk in the park.” She shared in an interview in 2022, “I'm at my pinaka-fit body, my state now. It did not happen overnight. Grabe 'yung sacrifices na I had to do. I had to work out every other day.”
Cassy condition
Just like Bea Alonzo and Carla Abellana, who were going through the same struggle of losing weight.
Cassy felt that she needed to change her mindset first, instead of just focusing on being thin in front of the camera.
"Sabi ko talaga, 'Alam mo, at this point, Cassandra, 'wag ka nang magpapayat, maging healthy ka muna,'"
