What you need to know about Arnold Clavio's survival story after a hemorrhagic stroke
There are a lot of things people can learn from Arnold Clavio's health scare that changed his life.
In the evening of June 11, when he was driving home from a golf game, the GMA Integrated News pillar shared something was off and he felt some numbness in the right side of his body.
It was later found out after some tests in the hospital that Igan suffered from a hemorrhagic stroke.
Arnold recounted the incident in an interview with Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho, detailing what happened on June 11 .
“Bigla na lang lumamig ito, right arm ko. Malamig siya na mabigat. Erratic yung drive ko, ano 'to?” Igan shared to Jessica.
“Hindi ko na matapakan 'yung brake, 'yung gas. Tumatagos 'yung paa ko. Sabi ko, hindi ko gusto 'to nangyayari. So, ite-text ko si Ina. Naku! Iba-iba ng letra na nasa cellphone, hindi na ako makabuo ng sentence.”
The TV and radio broadcaster added, “Tapos kita ko 'yung speedometer ko parang ang bilis ko, hindi naman ako tumatapak . 'Yun pala natatapakan ko siya nang mabilis. Pinipilit ko mag-brake, pero ayaw mag-break. Kailangan ko ma-break ito, kasi makaka-disgrasya talaga ako.”

In his Instagram post on June 14, Arnold recalled the moment when medical experts revealed to him that he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke.
“Sabi ko , titigil ako sa unang ospital na makikita ko . Kaya mula Antipolo , maingat ako na nag-drive sa Sumulong highway hanggang makarating ako sa Emergency Room ng Fatima University Medical Center .
“Doon inasikaso ako at after ilang test , lumitaw na ang blood pressure (BP) ko ay nasa 220 / 120 at ang blood sugar ko ay umabot ng 270.”
The Kapuso news personality continued, “Inirekomenda na isailalim ako sa CT Scan . Doon nakita na may 'slight bleeding' ako sa kaliwang bahagi ng aking utak . At sa oras na yon , ako ay nagkaroon na ng 'HEMORRHAGIC STROKE'!
“Inilipat ako sa St. Lukes Hospital para ma-obserbahan pa . Agad akong inasikaso sa ER ng kanilang brain attack team at dinala sa Acute Stroke Unit ng ospital para ganap na bantayan ang aking BP at sugar.
Hemorrhagic stroke
Based on several medical websites, a Hemorrhagic stroke is a life-threatening medical condition that happens when a blood vessel in your brain ruptures and bleeds.
According to the information from the my.clevelandclinic.org, a Hemorrhagic stroke can disrupt the normal circulation of blood in your brain, starving some areas of oxygen. Accumulated blood also puts pressure on surrounding brain areas, damaging or destroying them.
Hemorrhagic strokes are particularly dangerous because they cause severe symptoms that get worse quickly. Without fast medical attention, these strokes often cause permanent brain damage or even death.

Dr. Greg David Dayrit further elaborated what happened to Igan in his interview with Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho.
"Nagkaroon siya ng intracerebral hemorrhage. It's a brain hemorrhage due to a rupture of an artery sa brain. So may pumutok na artery dun sa kanyang utak," Dr. Dayrit explained.
“Kasi si Arnold, diabetic din siya. Ang mga diabetic, maraming complications. Hindi purely effect lang nung stroke, but pwede siyang nagkakaroon na ng complication ng diabetes, which is diabetic neuropathy. Kaya nagkakaroon siya ng mga pins and needles sa kanyang mga kamay, paa."
Lucky
Arnold admitted to Jessica that he is one “lucky person” that he was able to survive the serious health situation he was in.
He stressed that him being alive now is a miracle from God. “Ang tawag niya sa akin lucky man kasi out of danger na raw ako, rehabilitation na lang."
“Nung time na 'yun, alam mo, Ma'am Jess, hindi ko siya naisip kasi naka-focus ako makarating sa opsital. Pero nung nagsi-sink in na, sinuwerte ka na. Niligtas ka, agad pumasok sa isip ko naku totoong may himala ang Diyos. Hindi ka niya pababayaan.”
Difficult
But the road to recovery for Arnold will be a challenging one and he stated in his exclusive chat with Unang Hirit on June 28 some of the difficulties he is facing.
“Okay ako kaya lang kailangan pa ng rehabilitation, therapy, kasi 'yung right side ng body ko, nawala 'yung connection sa pumutok na part ng brain ko e, so kailangan mag-communicate sila so 'yun 'yung part ng therapy.”
“Para pa 'kong sanggol na naglalakad at ito, bestfriend ko (tungkod).”
July 3
Although he needs a walking stick or assistive cane to move, Arnold said that he feels a lot better in his Instagram post on July 3. “Malakas na!” ayon sa aking nuerologist na si Dr. Greg Dayrit . Pero need pa rin ng rehab at therapy para bumalik sa normal ang akong balanse . Meron pa rin na pamamanhid sa right arm and leg due to neuropathy na complications ng diabetes . Next need ko ulit na mag-undergo ng CT scan para makita kung natigil ba o kumalat pa ang pagdurugo sa left side ng aking utak.”
Learnings
Dr. Dayrit pointed out in his interview with Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho the things Arnold did that saved his life.
“Lucky for Arnold, 'yung naging hemorrhage niya maliit lang. So, it's a small part dun sa left side nung kaniyang thalamus. Ang effect nito usually, on the other side. Sa contralateral, right side niya ang affected. May konting weakness, meron siyang numbness at saka balance instability.
The adult neurologist added, “Ang galing nung ginawa ni Arnold, presence of mind pumunta na siya kaagad sa nearest hospital.”
Positive
The GMA Integrated News pillar is keeping a positive mindset despite what happened to him. He wrote on Instagram last July 6, “Another day . Another blessings. It's really nice to wake up in the morning realizing that God has given me another day to live.”
Walking
The highly-respected TV and radio broadcaster also posted a video of him on Instagram as he tries to walk without a cane to help build the strength of his legs.
Igan explained, “Subok lang na walang tungkod . To strengthen my legs lalo na 'yung kanan . Lakad lakad lakad lakad at malapit na tayong magkita-kita .
“Maraming salamat sa patuloy ninyong pagdarasal at tayo ay magtatagumpay . Forever grateful sa inyong lahat . May God bless you all.”

Arnold Clavio has also received a ton of prayers from celebrities and other news personalities wishing for his speedy recovery.
Arnold returns
After 54 days since his life-changing hemorrhagic store, Igan returned to his anchoring duty in 'Unang Hirit' and Super Radyo DZBB on August 5.
In his Instagram post, the highly respected Kapuso broadcaster expressed his gratitude for all those who supported him in his recovery.

Nakabalik na po ako sa trabaho - from @unanghirit to @dzbb594 . TV na , radyo pa !
