James Yap gets "sweet birthday surprise" from Michela Cazzola and their kids

By Bong Godinez
The PBA two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) awardee just turned 39.

Not even distance could prevent basketball superstar James Yap from celebrating his birthday with his beloved family.

The sweet-shooting forward turned 39 yesterday, February 15.

In an Instagram post, James proudly posted a photo of two birthday cakes sent to him by his longtime Italian girlfriend, Michela Cazzola, and their two children.

Michela is currently staying in Italy along with the couple's two children, Michael James and Francesca.

The cakes also came with photos of a card with drawings and greetings made by the kids, and family pictures that were taken during James's last visit to Italy.

“A sweet birthday surprise from my kids,” wrote James.

“Papa may be far away but I feel your love. Thanks Mic for sending this. Indeed a happy birthday for me.”

Fellow Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) cagers like Ryan Arana and Jake Pascual, as well as college player Ricci Rivero, also greeted the two-time MVP via Instagram.

Finding time

The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing global lockdown have made it difficult for Michela and the children to travel back to the Philippines.

That didn't stop James, however, from flying to Italy last year to spend Christmas and New Year with his family.

Both Michela and James took turns posting pictures on social media of their fun reunion for the holiday season.

When it came time for James to fly back to Manila, he posted Polaroid photos of him with his family and wrote, “Miss you guys. See you again soon.”

Still one of the best

James, who is currently playing for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA, remains one of the league's marquee players.

The former University of the East standout joined the PBA in 2004 and immediately rose as the face of the league as a member of the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.

Just some of the many accolades he won as a pro include four PBA Finals MVP, two MVP awards, and seven championships including a rare Grand Slam or three consecutive championships won by the San Mig Coffee Mixers during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

He also represented the Philippines as part of the country's National Team in various international competitions.

James was traded to Rain or Shine in 2016 in exchange for another UE alumni, Paul Lee.

His love life is just as colorful as his basketball career.

James's marriage with actress-TV host Kris Aquino in 2005 intensified the glare of the spotlight on him on and off the court.

The couple's son, James Carlos Aquino Yap Jr., or Bimby, was born on April 19, 2007.

Kris and James eventually separated in 2010.
