Why you should stop using scrubs to exfoliate your face
Exfoliation is an essential part in any skincare routine as it removes dead and old skin cells to make way for newer, healthier cells.
Although it has a lot of benefits to improve the skin, using the wrong kind of exfoliator can damage the cells after prolonged use.
Beauty guru and YouTube content creator Raiza Contawi talked all about exfoliating the proper way in her latest video.
In the video, she explained that there are two kinds of exfoliator: manual and chemical.
Manual or physical exfoliators are products which contain powdered walnut shells, microbeads, or sugars.
What these particles do is that they scrub away dead skin cells to reveal the new ones underneath.
The effects of manual exfoliators can be felt immediately--the skin looks more youthful and the texture feels smoother.
However, using these products overtime can damage the skin and make it more sensitive.
Raiza even raved over manual exfoliators in her previous videos. "Before, nagustuhan ko 'yung grit dahil doon sa feeling ng instant exfoliation.
“Parang after mong gamitin, [ang] smooth.
“Scrub talaga siya, e. Hindi ko naisip talaga na ganoon siya ka-abrasive to the point na naging super sensitive siya."
Meanwhile, chemical exfoliators gently dissolve dead skin cells and are much easier on the skin compared to scrubs.
Chemical exfoliators generally fall under two categories which are Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA).
Some examples of AHAs are glycolic, lactic, and citric acids. AHAs peel away at the surface of the skin to help bring out new skin cells.
Different acids target different skin problems such as enlarged pores, mild hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone.
Although, AHAs make skin more sensitive to the sun, so daily use of sunscreen is a must.
BHAs are more commonly known as salicylic acid.
These products penetrate deeper in the skin to dry out excess oils and unclog skin.
BHAs are recommended towards those with combination, oily, and blemish prone skin.
