GMA Network Partners with IPOPHL for 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS)

GMA Network, as part of its continuing commitment to protect intellectual property rights in the broadcast and content creation industries, joins forces with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) for the 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS) happening on October 21 to 25, 2024.

With the theme "Unlocking the Future: Tech Trends and Challenges in Copyright," the event aims to provide participants with insights on Copyright-Based Industries (CBIs), as well as copyright laws covering literary works, the performing arts, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other related topics.

In an interview on Super Radyo DZBB 594 kHz’s “Usap Tayo: Super Kuwentuhan with Mark and Susan,” Atty. Exequiel Valerio from IPOPHL’s Copyright team and the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights underscored the importance of protecting intellectual property rights.

"Most creative and literary works can be covered under copyright—mga sulatin, books, letters, literary works, paintings, photographs—kahit mga photo na kinukuha sa pang-araw-araw. Of course, ang mga kanta na ginagawa ng ating composers, ng artists. Also computer programs. Choreography ng sayaw," he said.

"Anything creative, literary, or artistic, maaari siyang covered ng copyright."

Another relevant and timely topic discussed during the interview was the wide use of popular songs and jingles during political campaigns. Atty. Valeriano confirmed that permission from copyright owners must be secured before their use. "Ang pinaka-basic principle ng copyright law is you have to ask permission from the creator or owner before you can use the work. You have to be licensed to use the work. And kapalit niyan, you have to pay royalties sa may-ari ng copyright."

These and other topics relating to copyright laws will be covered at the 2nd Philippine International Copyright Summit (PICS) slated on October 21 to 25, 2024 at Novotel Manila Araneta in Cubao, Quezon City.

Interested participants may avail of in-person and virtual sessions as the summit will be a hybrid event.

Major event partners are the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO);

INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property in France); Quezon City Mayor’s Office; Korea Copyright Protection Agency (KCOPA); Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Inc.
