From among an impressive crop of candidates in the 2016 GMA Network Excellence Award (GNEA), Far Eastern University exemplary alumna Ronalyn P. Pordan was hailed as this year’s winner in the Network’s search for outstanding student achievers.
The GMA Network Excellence Award is bestowed upon a bona fide Filipino graduating student who best embodies exemplary leadership, stellar academic performance, and proactive social responsibility.
GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon led the awarding ceremonies held on July 22 at the GMA Network Center. Atty. Gozon together with GMA Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications Angela J. Cruz awarded Pordan with a trophy and P50,000 cash.
This year’s GNEA panel of judges include GMA First Vice President for Public Affairs Nessa S. Valdellon, YesPinoy Foundation Chairman and Kapuso Primetime King Jose Sixto “Dingdong” Dantes III, and GNEA lead advocate and Kapuso star Benjamin Alves.
Pordan graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Far Eastern University, and was also an awardee of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines-NCR. She is the proud founder of the MariKit Movement, an organization which empowers women by teaching them how to protect themselves with the aid of educational sessions and self-defense trainings.
After winning the Excellence Award, Pordan hopes to inspire others to be initiators of change. “Gusto ko po sanang maging inspirasyon sa iba pang mga kabataan, sa iba pang Communication graduates, na hindi lang kami bastaCommunication majors lang, kung hindi meron kaming magagawang mabuti para sa lipunan [I would like to be an inspiration to my fellow youth and other Communication graduates, that we are not simply Communication majors, but we can also do something good for society],” she said.
Despite besting the six other finalists chosen from entries sent in from all over the country, she hopes to work with her fellow achievers in creating a positive impact in society. “Gusto ko lang po na sana maging allies po kami. Hindi po kami competitors, kung hindi maging allies kami para sa pagbabago dito sa lipunan [I would just like us to become allies. We are not competitors, but we should be allies for change in society],” furthered the latest addition to the Network’s roster of Excellence Awardees.
Pordan intends to take up Law in her alma mater while continuing to champion her present advocacies.
Meanwhile, Gozon says the award encourages the youth of today to excel in every aspect of their daily lives, as they are the hope for the future. “Ito ay ating ginagawa taun-taon sapagka’t gusto nating bigyan ng inspirasyon ang mga kabataan. Dahil sabi nga ni Rizal, nasa kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan. Magagaling itong crop ngayon[We mount this each year because we want to give inspiration to the youth. As Rizal said, the hope for our country lies with the youth. This crop [of candidates] is an excellent one.],” he shared.
GMA’s partner institutions in this educational excellence initiative are the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Mass Communication, Don Bosco Technical College, Angeles University Foundation, YesPinoy Foundation, and Airfreight 2100, Inc.
