DLSU Lady Spikers bag third straight crown
The DLSU Lady Spikers earned their third straight championship with a 26-24 25-20 26-24 victory over the FEU Lady Tamaraws on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
La Salle played catch-up in the first set, going down 7-3 early in the match. But Kim Dy and May Luna remained relentless, carrying the defending champions to take a 25-24 advantage before earning set point.
In the second set, it was FEU’s turn to chase, as DLSU raced to a 16-9 advantage. Dy continued to put pressure on FEU’s defense, coming up with timely hits, before Des Cheng and Aduke Ogunsanya seized converted to take Set 2.
The Lady Spikers looked like they were going to cruise to a straight sets victory, after a Heather Guino-o service error was followed by a Michelle Cobb ace for a 24-20 DLSU lead. Jerrili Malabanan then scored off back to back hits, as Kim Dy’s serve went long to bring FEU to 24-all.
La Salle had enough in the tank to tow their team to the title, as Kim Dy scored off a floater, before Tin Tiamzon delivered match point.
It is DLSU’s sixth title in the last eight seasons, and their tenth in 15 years. This is also the third time that DLSU won its third straight championship. The green-and-white squad first won three straight crowns during Season 66-68, and the second three-peat from Season 73-75.
FEU, meanwhile, last held the title in Season 70. — with reports from Justin Kenneth Carandang/LA, GMA News
