Fil-Am skier Asa Miller to represent PHL in the Winter Olympics

The Filipino contingent at the Winter Olympics is growing!

Joining figure skater Michael Martinez is 17-year-old Fil-Am skier Asa Miller, who will be competing in the giant slalom event of Alpine Skiing.

According to a press statement from the Philippine Ski Federation, the Portland native Miller met the International Ski Federation’s Olympic requirements with less than 140 points, and as a dual citizen of the United States and the Philippines, decided to represent the Philippines, his mother’s home country.

“I’ve wanted to race for a national team, that’s ever little ski racers’ dream. When I saw the opportunity to race for the Philippines and get to be the only one representing them on a world stage, I had to take it up," Miller said.

He added: "It’s awesome being able to just represent them [my family] and all the people and everyone I care about who I don’t get to see very often.”

Miller has joined nine competitions in the last two years, but has been chasing the Olympic dream in the last nine years.

“I’d just like to feel like I performed my best and just be among the top in the world because that’s just gonna be unreal to just be with the people I’ve always looked up to. So it’s gonna be awesome being surrounded by them and feeling a part of the whole thing,” Miller continued.

The Winter Olympics will be held from February 9 to 25 at PyeongChang in South Korea. — LA, GMA News
