PHL’s gold medal haul climbs to 7 courtesy of gymnastics, wushu, fencing

The Philippines' gold medal haul in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games rose to seven, with the three latest medals coming in from gymnastics, wushu, and fencing.

Filipino-American gymnast Kaitlin de Guzman, wushu player Agatha Wong, and fencer Brennan Wayne Louie each took home a gold medal after emerging on top of their respective categories.

De Guzman, 17, brought the Philippines its fifth gold medal, after ruling the uneven bars category with 12.875 points, ahead of Tracie Ang of Malaysia with 12.550 points and Rifda Irfanaluthfi of Indonesia with 12.075 points.

According to De Guzman's profile on the USA Gymnastics website, she began training in the sport in the preschool PE class of her mother Cintamoni De Guzman, a former SEA Games gymnast who also won a gold medal for uneven bars in 1995.

Meanwhile, Wong won gold in the Women's Taijiquan with a score of 9.66. She beat Brunei's Basma Lachkar (9.54) and Singapore's Ho Lin Ying (9.44).

Pinoy fencers Louie and Nathaniel Perez respectively won gold and silver in the Men's Foil Individual.

They are trailed by bronze medalists Singapore's Jet Ng Shang Fei and Thailand's Sopanut Mayakarn.

Earlier in the day, 2015 SEA Games gymnastics medalist Reyland Capellan defended his winning streak by grabbing the gold in the gymnastics floor event.

Triathletes Nikko Huelgas and Kim Mangrobang, and marathoner Mary Joy Tabal also took the gold in their events prior to De Guzman and Capellan's victories.
