Rungvisai: ‘Nietes a great fighter, but small for super flyweight’

WBC and The RING world super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai is keeping an eye out for possible opponents in his division ahead of his upcoming title defense against Iran Diaz of Mexico in the main event of ONE: Kingdom of Heroes on October 6 in Bangkok, Thailand.

One of the names in Rungvisai's radar is Filipino three-division champion Donnie Nietes, who is scheduled to fight his countryman Aston Palicte on September 8 (September 9 PHL time) in California.

Should Nietes emerge victorious, Rungvisai would like to test himself against one of the greatest boxers the Philippines has produced.

"The thing is if I get to fight Nietes in the future it will be a great fight because he's a great fighter," he said.

He warned, however, that Nietes may be biting off more than he can chew, saying that the Filipino champion, who used to compete in the minimum weight (105 lbs) division, might be too small to compete at super flyweight (115 lbs).

"I think Donnie Nietes is a little bit small for the 115-pound division, but he's a great fighter so he will be a problem for anyone," said Rungvisai. — BM, GMA News
