MAN ON THE SIDE

Liam Gallagher: 'I think I’m a fantastic chap'

Liam Gallagher, erstwhile frontman of Oasis and Beady Eye, is coming to Manila for the first time this August. Even if you’re not a fan, it’s hard to overstate the significance of this show. For a time in the 1990s and early 2000s, Oasis were the biggest band on the planet, and Liam was its voice.

Releasing seven studio albums and selling an estimated 70 million records, the band has carved its place in modern music. Songs like “Live Forever,” “Supersonic,” “Wonderwall,” “Don’t look Back in Anger,” and “Champagne Supernova” are modern classics and are “familiar to millions,” to borrow the title from one of their live releases.

It’s no secret that infighting within the band, particularly between Liam and his brother Noel, was the reason Oasis finally called it quits in August 2009.

In June that year, I was lucky enough to have caught their show in Singapore, which, as it turned out, would be one of their last.

It might not be possible in the near future to hear Oasis songs sung by the band’s original members, including Noel, but the chance to hear them live by their vocalist is probably the next best thing. Thanks to the people of Ovation Productions, the company making it possible to bring Liam to Manila, I was able to chat with the 44-year-old singer-songwriter about his decision to pursue a solo career, what Oasis song he wouldn’t mind singing for the rest of his life, and what the difference is between a “rock star” and a “rock and roll star.”

Where are you now and what's outside your window?
I'm in a hotel in Helsinki; there's a beautiful park outside my window with a load of beautiful people outside basking in the Sun.

I saw you perform with Oasis in Singapore back in 2009. It turned out to be one of your last shows together as a band. Do you remember anything from that show?
I don't remember much about the show but I do remember being overwhelmed with the love that I and Oasis received from the people of Singapore.

You were quite hesitant before about pursuing a career as a solo artist, but it seems you've had a change of heart. What brought this on?
I'm enjoying life as a solo artist although it feels and sounds very much like a band; I'm currently touring so have the band around me on a daily basis.

What was the experience like working on your solo album? I mean, compared to when you were working with a band, it must have been quite different.
It was amazing; it didn't feel strange at all. I'm already looking forward to writing and recording the next one.

What's "Wall of Glass" about?
I never like to dissect my songs; I think it's important for the listener to make their own mind up.

What's your favorite song on As You Were?
I really like them all; I don't have a favorite — they all have a place on the record and a place in my heart.

Is there an artist you would NEVER want to work with?
Contrary to popular belief, I don't have a problem with any artists in particular; there's no one that stands out that I'd want to avoid. If the music is right then I'd work with anyone.

How much do you think you've changed as a person since you became a parent?
I've definitely calmed down a lot; I don't just have just myself to worry about anymore but I wouldn't want to change too much as I think I'm a fantastic chap.

If you could sing only one Oasis song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“Live Forever.”

What's the best thing about being a rock star?
I'm a Rock n' Roll star — there's a difference. Rock Stars wear leather trousers and pointy shoes. Rock n' Roll stars are a lot cooler; the best thing about it is being able to sing Rock n Roll music.

Liam Gallagher: Live in Manila happens at 8pm on August 14, 2017 at the Mall of Asia Arena. For tickets, go to  smtickets
