Celebs, LGBT groups chide Pacquiao for comparing gays to animals

Celebrities and LGBT groups are up in arms over the statement of Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao using animal analogy to express his opposition to same-sex relationships.

In a television interview, Pacquiao, who is running for senator in the May elections, said "common sense" would tell you that animals don't engage in sex with the same gender.

"Common sense lang," he said. "Makakita ka ba ng any animals na lalake sa lalake o babae sa babae?"

"Mas mabuti pa 'yung hayop, marunong kumikilala kung [lalake o babae], 'di ba? Ngayon, kung lalake sa lalake o babae sa babae—mas masahol pa sa hayop ang tao," he added.

Aiza Seguerra and wife Liza were among those who first reacted to this via social media, with Liza trying to maintain a sense of humor.

Naalog na yata dahil sa mga suntok ang ulo ni manny pacquiao! Tsk tsk. You just lost half of HUMANITY dahil sa kahayupan ng sagot mo...Nakakalungkot...

Aiza, on the other hand, was a little more straight to the point.

Aiza later amended her statement with a "live and let live" post, coupled with a meme about religious beliefs.

Celebrity blogger and Miss Universe 2015 judge Perez Hilton sounded off on the video, calling Pacquiao's views messed up.

Host-actors John Lapus and Vice Ganda also made their feelings known, with Vice Ganda even taking jabs at Pacquiao's poor attendance in Congress.

Pro-LGBT party-list LADLAD likewise condemned the statement and encouraged people not to vote for candidates with "shallow understanding of issues" that the LGBT communiy is facing.

Please do NOT vote for so-called Rep. Manny Pacquiao for senator of this land. His anti-LGBT statement betray a shallow...

Another group, Metro Manila Pride, chided Pacquiao for the comment.

"We're so mad, loves," it wrote on Facebook as it urged the public to vote only those who "truly advocate for the human rights of all."

Some Facebook users pointed out that Pacquiao's comment was not even factual.

"First off, I can't stand homophobia," said Jewel U. Angeles. "Second, I can't stand when people use analogies that don't even work because YES, THERE ARE HOMOSEXUAL ANIMALS. Jeeeeezus."

Jesus Paras took the time to enumerate species were homosexual behavior is observed: "Mr. Manny Pacquaio, examples ng hayop which are homosexual: dolphin, lion, dragonfly, albatross, seagulls... tsk, aral muna bago kampanya."

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, Pacquiao clarified that he is not condemning anyone but just telling what is in the Bible.

"I rather obey the Lord's command than obeying the desires of the flesh. Im not condemning anyone, but I'm just telling the truth of what the Bible says. The truth from the Bible is what changed me from my old ways,” he said, quoting a Bible passage. —Aya Tantiangco and Amita O. Legaspi/KBK, GMA News
