Revised Anti-Distracted Driving Act in effect July 6, 2017

Motorists are advised that the Anti-Distracted Driving Act with new implementing rules and regulations (IRR) is to be implemented starting Thursday, July 6, 2017.

The implementation of the law was previously suspended since it resulted in confusion among motorists.

According to a report on Unang Balita on Thursday by Jay Sabale, authorities are reminding motorists to keep their hands on the wheel and not on a gadget.

Under the revised IRR, motorists are prohibited from making calls on their cellphones while driving.

Motorists may receive calls but using only a handset while driving.

Reading and sending text messages is not allowed. However, if there is an emergency, drivers may do so but must be able to prove the emergency situation.

Those using a navigational app to drive must set the location before driving.

Objects may be placed on the dashboard and stickers may be placed on the windshield as long as these are not more than four inches from the dashboard.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board advised motorists to follow the law to avoid being fined.

Those caught violating the Anti-Distracted Driving Act face fines of P5,000 for the first offense, P10,000 for the second offense, and P15,000 for the third offense. The driver's license will also be cancelled for third-time offenders. —KG/KVD, GMA News
