More rain expected as TS Urduja loiters over Samar


Tropical Storm Urduja (Kai-tak) continued to loiter over northern Samar province early Sunday morning, weather service PAGASA reported in a 5 a.m. bulletin.

At 4 a.m., Urduja was in the vicinity of Calbayog City, Samar, and was moving west at 13 kilometers per hour.

Urduja also maintained its strength as still had winds of 65 kph, which could gust up to 100 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal 2 remained raised over:

  • Sorsogon,
  • Masbate including Ticao Island,
  • Romblon,
  • the Cuyo Islands,
  • Northern Samar,
  • the northern part of Samar,
  • Biliran,
  • Aklan,
  • Capiz,
  • the northern part of Antique, and
  • the northern part of Iloilo.

These areas may experience a meter high storm surge, and open sea wave heights of  4.1 to 14 meters.

Meanwhile, Signal 1 was still also up over:

  • the southern part of Occidental Mindoro,
  • the southern part of Oriental Mindoro,
  • Catanduanes,
  • Camarines Sur,
  • Albay,
  • Burias Island,
  • the northern portion of Palawan including the Calamian Islands,
  • the rest of Iloilo,
  • the rest of Antique,
  • Guimaras,
  • the northern part of Negros Occidental,
  • the northern part of Cebu,
  • Leyte,
  • Eastern Samar, and
  • the rest of Samar.

Open sea wave heights around areas under Signal 1 would be from 1.25 to four meters.

Sea travel remained risky over the seaboards of areas under a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal, with flooding and landslides also a threat in the following areas:

  • the Western Visayas,
  • the Bicol Region,
  • southern Quezon,
  • Batangas,
  • the Mindoro provinces,
  • Marinduque, Romblon,
  • the Cuyo Islands, and
  • the Calamian Islands.

Given Urduja's speed and direction, Urduja was projected to be:

  • 60 kms north-northeast of Cuyo, Palawan by Monday morning,
  • 120 kms north-northwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan by Tuesday morning,
  • 360 kms west of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan by Wednesday morning, and
  • 675 kms west of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Thursday morning.
