Real-life batarang proves the science behind Batman works!

Anyone can dream of becoming Batman, and given that 2014 is the 75th Anniversary of the character’s creation, there's a ton of reasons to toy around with the idea that you can dress the part and wear a cape and cowl—maybe even create a replica of the Dark Knight’s utility belt and arm it with his various signature weapons.

 

One boomerang enthusiast by the name of Victor Poulin was able to pull off this feat, by crafting a pretty big but still very impressive “Batarang” that he’s managed to showcase in a video. 

 

Gauging the wind speed and using a wide range camera, Victor demonstrates in a snowy field via his own YouTube video how something that’s as oddly shaped as a Bat can work given the right dimensions and creativity… And he proves it quite effectively to boot! 

 

 

In one throw, the Batarang spins like any ordinary boomerang, and it surprisingly returns to the thrower’s hand! Succeeding throws were hits and misses, but Victor gets the point across, and proves that even the science behind a beloved and popular fictional character such as Batman works!

 

As one of the most recognizable weapons in comics and popular culture, the Batarang is Batman’s signature weapon of choice, and honors his dedication to fight crime by non-lethal means. A portmanteau of the terms “Bat” and “Boomerang”, the weapon was originally conceived to help the caped crusader strike criminals and knock them out with a well-timed throw, and much like a returning boomerang, the batarang would spin back to Batman’s hand flawless and intact. 

 

Several interpretations of the Batarang through the years have seen the weapon evolve into a shuriken-styled throwing object. 

 

In fact, Christopher Nolan’s first film in The Dark Knight Trilogy “Batman Begins” shows Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) crafting his signature weapon based on his experiences learning the art of ninjitsu with the League of Shadows, embracing the notion of a “symbol”: his childhood fear of Bats transformed into a weapon against injustice. 

 

 

Whatever form or shape it takes, the Batarang remains a symbolic part of Batman’s dedication to justice and honoring his moral code. It’s amazing that one man was able to make a real-life version, and speaks volumes of how creative a person can be if he puts his mind to work effectively. — TJD, GMA News
