Monstrous fish species and coconut crabs on 'Born to be Wild'

BORN EXPEDITIONS 2015
Finale this Sunday, April 26

In Calayan Island, Doc Nielsen Donato observes how local fishermen use long line fishing as a method of catching big, deep sea fish.  In this part of the sea, Doc Nielsen comes face to face with some of the most monstrous fish species he has ever encountered, including a species unfamiliar even to local fishers.  Doc Nielsen and his team also document a fish that locals say resembles the aswang from folklore.

Doc Ferds Recio continues his adventure in Batanes and discovers that the tourists' most sought after local dish, the coconut crab, is being banned from consumption.

The coconut crab, or tatus, is a threatened species according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).  Some researchers fear that the famous crabs may face extinction if not protected for future generations. Doc Ferds looks closely at the tatus as he and his team attempt to add information that may be used by scientists studying the species.

The finale of Born to be Wild’s summer expeditions airs this Sunday, 9:45 AM, after AHA!
