Phivolcs: No tsunami threat from Loyalty Island quake

State seismologists allayed fears of a tsunami triggered by a magnitude-7.1 quake that hit the Loyalty Islands in the Pacific Tuesday afternoon. In its tsunami bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) set the alert level at zero, meaning that there is no threat to the Philippines. "A strong teleseismic earthquake occurred in Loyalty Islands at 4:55 p.m. ... with a depth of 10 km and a preliminary magnitude of 7.1. No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data," it said. Phivolcs added earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coast located within 100 km of the epicenter. Thus, it said the tsunami alert in the Philippines is "0." "This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," it said. — TJD, GMA News
