Pope grants indulgence for Perpetual Help icon veneration

Devotees venerating the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help can avail of a plenary indulgence granted recently by Pope Francis.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said the indulgence applies to those who venerate the icon in Baclaran or churches run by the Redemptorists.

An article on the Redemptorists UK website said the plenary indulgence was "part of the celebrations for the Jubilee year of the 150th anniversary of the Redemptorists receiving the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help."

"The indulgence is available to all who make a pilgrimage, between the 27th June 2015 and 27th June 2016, to the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome or in any Redemptorist church anywhere in the world to venerate the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help," it added (http://www.redemptorists.co.uk/1334-pope-francis-grants-a-plenary-indulgence.html).

But it added the usual conditions for obtaining a plenary indulgence apply, including the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father.

It also said the visit should conclude with the recitation of the Our Father, the Creed and prayers to Our Blessed Mother.

"Those who because of sickness, old age or some other grave reason are not able to make a pilgrimage may also obtain the plenary indulgence. They do this by associating themselves spiritually with the jubilee celebrations and pilgrimages in a spirit of sorrow for their sins and with the intention of fulfilling the usual conditions. In doing this they should seek the mercy of God, offering their sufferings before a small icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help," it said.

The CBCP noted an indulgence is a “remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints.” Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
