Palace confirms getting info on kill plot vs. Pope

Malacañang on Saturday confirmed the government received information about a plot to assassinate Pope Francis during his visit to the Philippines, but insisted the information was unverified.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the government's security establishments were aware of that raw information, which she said did not have much details.

"Aware po sila, although they did make it a point to establish that the information had no details and was unverified, but because of the situation, it was passed on anyway," she said on government-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan.

Security was tight in the venues of activities Pope Francis took part in during his five-day visit to the country.

Moreover, Valte said the information was passed on and received "out of prudence."

On the other hand, she insisted the information on the supposed kill plot was not the reason for the government's cutting off mobile phone signals during some papal activities, including the concluding Mass at the Luneta.

"No, it is not the reason. That decision to implement that particular security measure was made even prior to the reception of the raw and unverified information," she said. Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
