Pope Francis had wanted to attend the wake of Kristel Mae Padasas, the volunteer who died in a freak accident shortly after a papal Mass in Tacloban last Saturday.

This was disclosed by Metro Manila police chief Director Carmelo Valmoria, radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported Thursday afternoon.

Valmoria and interior secretary Manuel Roxas II went to Padasas' wake in Taguig City to pay their respects.

Kristel died after a sound box fell on her after the papal Mass. At the time, Tacloban was experiencing bad weather due to Tropical Storm Amang (Mekkhala), which forced the pope to cut short his visit to Leyte.

At the wake on Thursday, Valmoria said they were informed the pope had plans to go to Padasas' wake in Taguig City but the plan eventually did not push through.

Valmoria was quoted in the report as saying that had the plan gone through, it would have been a "security nightmare" to bring him to Taguig City from the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila and back.
