Shepherd One, the flight bringing Pope Francis to Rome, took off from Manila at 10: 12 a.m. Monday, ending the Pope's five-day visit to the Philippines.

The Philippine Airlines Airbus 340 left Villamor Airbase a few minutes later than the scheduled 10 a.m. departure.

The pontiff was seen waving from his seat from the airplane's window while the plane was parked in the runway.

Pope Francis was sent off by 15-member government delegation led by President Benigno Aquino III and Vice President Binay.

Another group composed of Catholic Church leaders led by Manila Archishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle was also present to send the pontiff off.

Pope Francis was seen carrying a small black bag on his right hand upon his arrival at the airbase until he boarded the plane at 9:49 a.m.

He bowed and made a quick wave before entering the airplane while the bugle band played the Christian song "Shine Jesus Shine." Tagle and other church leaders were seen waving back at the pope.

Several well-wishers at the runway took the opportunity to kiss the pope’s ring for the last time while he was walking down the red carpet.

A total of 440 children under the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s care also danced and sang to the tune of Christian songs at the outskirts of the runway while the pontiff blessed his well-wishers.

Upon arrival at Villamor Airbase at around 9:30, the pontiff was greeted by Aquino, even as the children dancers performed a dance number.

A few meters away from Villamor Airbase, Pope Francis had the pope mobile stopped to kiss three children. — with a report from Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
