For tired, wet devotees, coffee and cup noodles are manna from heaven

As the hours crawled and the rain poured and cold seeped through soaked bodies on Sunday, it's only understandable that devotees eager to witness Pope Francis near the Apostolic Nunciature would start craving food and warmth.

Fortunately,  a small stand selling hot coffee and cup noodles became their answered prayer.

A brainchild of cousins Sarah Batongbacal, 21, and Leslie Huete 16, the stall was a mere shoe rack mounted on a sidewalk and filled with sachets of instant coffee, cigarettes, candies, homemade sandwiches, and other snacks to sell to the waiting crowd.

The goods came from the sari-sari store Sarah's family owns located near the Nunciature. Their neighbor, Jenny Martinez, 29, also pitched in with cup noodles in the hopes of making a small income. Sarah's mother provided the boiled water.

With the coffee at P15 per sachet and noodles P25 per cup, devotees and even police officers on duty were coming to their stall almost non-stop.

"Nakakataranta pag dumami 'yung tao," Sarah said of their little business. Still, they are grateful for the opportunity to earn extra money.

Leslie, a fourth year high school student, volunteered to man their stall during the holiday break. Sarah, meanwhile, is still looking for a job after her contract as an employee in a shopping mall expired recently.

The two opened the stall at 12 noon on Sunday, Pope Francis' fourth day in the country. Several customers and police officers sometimes came to exchange jokes to pass the time.

Despite the busy stretch of days for the cousins, they wish for Pope Francis, who will depart from Manila on Monday, to visit the country again in order to meet more Filipinos.

"Sana makabalik siya dito ulit. Kasi marami ditong tao na umaasang makita siya," Sarah said. —KBK, GMA News
