Payong, ibaba!’ Did Pope Francis hear this chant?

Aside from "We love you, Pope," "Viva Il Papa" and "Papa Francisco," there may have been one chant related to Pope Francis' Philippine visit that he may not have heard.

With the weather turning rainy on Sunday, many in the crowd waiting to get a glimpse of the Pope were chanting "Payong, Payong," radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported.

Poeple lining the road between the Apostolic Nunciature and the Luneta had brought umbrellas due to the rain, as shown in a photo by dzBB's Juego.

Some outside the Nunciature even chanted, "Payong, payong, ibaba, ibaba!" – a play on militant groups' chants for price rollbacks.

Chants of "Payong, payong!" were also heard as the papal convoy reached the area near the Museo Pambata.

Earlier, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle had discouraged the faithful from bringing umbrellas and urged them to bring raincoats instead.

Tagle said using umbrellas could hamper the sight of those behind the holder and even trigger a fight. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
