‘Papa Francesco’ rides pope-jeepney amid cheers on Manila’s streets

The Filipino-style pope mobile—a white jeep fashioned into Pope Francis’ open motorcade vehicle—finally reigned supreme as a true King of the Road does on Manila’s streets as it took the Supreme Pontiff from his residence at the Apostolic Nunciature to the Quirino Grandstand.

Pope Francis exited the Nunciature at 2:25 p.m.

As in his past motorcades, crowds of cheering, waving devotees lined up the streets to have a glimpse of Pope Francis. Many were carrying handkerchiefs and images of the Sto. Niño.

Chants of "Papa Francesco," a Sinulog dance, and the ringing of church bells highlighted a fiesta welcome for Pope Francis as he arrived at the Luneta Sunday afternoon.

The Pope arrived at the Luneta aboard a jeepney-themed Popemobile to the cheers of Filipinos, many of whom had been waiting in the area since Saturday.

Many in the crowd raised images of the Santo Niño (Christ Child) as the papal convoy passed by them.

For his part, the pope blessed children and babies in the crowd as his Popemobile passed them.

Sunday's fiesta welcome was in response to the call of Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines president and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas for a fiesta welcome for the Pope at the concluding Mass.

Villegas had also encouraged the faithful to bring their Santo Niño images to welcome the Pope.  —Joel Locsin/KBK/NB, GMA News
