One of the four young persons selected to publicly speak with Pope Francis also had a chance to pose with him for a selfie during the Encounter with the Youth event at University of Santo Tomas on Sunday morning.

Engineer and youth volunteer Rikki Macolor had the opportunity for the pic with Pope Francis before the pontiff walked toward the popemobile from the UST Grandstand, where the youth encounter was held.

As one of the chosen youths to address Pope Francis, Macolor asked the pontiff for advice on how the youth can be of service to others.

"How can we be successful without being blinded by earthly pursuits? What more can we do today?" he asked.

Macolor invented the portable solar night light that was distributed to affected families in the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

He said his experience during the calamity made him realize that innovation is about changing other people's lives.

In his impromptu message delivered mostly in Spanish, Pope Francis challenged young people to learn how to weep for the poor.

Toward the end of the event, the pontiff swayed and held hands with the children who sang "Tell the World of His Love," the iconic theme song of the 1995 World Youth Day celebration in Manila.

Afterward, attendees chanted, "We love you, Pope Francis!”

Following the meeting at UST, Pope Francis will celebrate a mass at Quirino Grandstand at 3:30 p.m. An estimated six million Filipinos are expected to troop to Luneta for the pontiff’s final public event during his five-day-long visit. Xianne Arcangel/JST, GMA News
