In time for the Mass Pope Francis will officiate in Rizal Park on Sunday afternoon, several groups asked the Catholic Church to truly work with the poor.

Giving Voice to the Cry of the Poor, an alliance of church, missionary, farmers, and urban poor groups, held a rally at the corner of Kalaw and Taft Avenues to call the attention of the Church to their message.

"We want the Church to act on the appeal of Pope Francis to give voice on the issues of the poor and oppressed. Solidarity with the poor means getting involved with the poor community," Rebecca Lawson, an American citizen who has been a missionary in the Philippines for 10 years, told GMA News Online.

"They should try to really work with the poor. Live in solidarity with them. Stand with them and not just dole-outs," she said.

On the other side of the road, another group, All Worker's Unity, called for the advancement of the rights of the workers, citing that the Pope loves the laborers.

"Isabuhay ang mga aral ni Pope Francis! Ipaglaban ang mga karapatan ng manggagawa," the group said in a pamphlet they were distributing to people in Luneta. — BM, GMA News
