An inmate at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) made a portrait of Pope Francis via pyrography, or wood-burning, in time for the pontiff's visit to the Philippines later this week.

According to Fr. Anton Pascual, president of Radio Veritas, the portrait was made by Ariel Cabiluna, an inmate serving a life sentence at the prison's maximum security facility.

At the bottom right of the portrait, Cabiluna signed his name along with his identification number at NBP.

Cabiluna spent two weeks working on the portrait, which will either be presented to Pope Francis during his stay in the Philippines, or will be sent to the Vatican after the visit, Pascual said.

He added that a smaller version of the portrait is already with Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, who will give it to the Pope.

Paintings and pyrography are some of the skills taught as part of Caritas Manila's livelihood program for NBP inmates, Pascual said.

"Sila naman, sabi niya hindi sila makakalabas. Sa pagdating ng Holy Father, nakakulong sila, so kung pwede raw ibigay ito sa Holy Father. Nagre-request lang sila ng picture, makuhanan lang ng picture, happy na sila kapag nakuhanan na ng picture na tinatanggap ng Holy Father [ang portrait]," he added.

NBP inmates were among the groups from various sectors that wrote to Pope Francis seeking an audience with him during his visit.

“At this point, we know that it is impossible to happen, but we are still taking our chance of inviting you our beloved Father, to please visit us here in prisons. We would like to share with you how God's eternal grace transforms sinners like us. It will be a great blessing for us to have Christ's disciple and our Father here in our midst, to give us and many other prisoners strength and unwavering hope in God's love and forgiveness," said their letter dated Sept. 26, 2014. — BM, GMA News
