Filipino youths based in Bacolod City have launched a movement to prepare young Filipinos for Pope Francis' visit to the Philippines this January.

Dubbed Youth United for the Pope Iloilo (YUP), the movement seeks to promote works of mercy while sharing the Gospel and studying the life and teachings of Pope Francis.

The Pope is to visit the Philippines from Jan. 15 to 19, though organizers expect to finalize his itinerary in November.

YUP convenor Paul Argamosa said the movement has three main areas of action:

- to know Pope Francis and his teachings
- to promote works of mercy
- to share the Gospel in the way the Pope explains it in his Post-Synodal Apostolic exhortation “Joy of the Gospel.”

YUP has also organized “reading and discussion groups” to study Pope Francis’ homilies, including those he delivered in Rio de Jainero for World Youth Day 2013.

Also, it is holding catechism classes in the poorer barangays in Iloilo City including Timawa in Tanza district, and Magsaysay in La Paz.

Also, it encourages visits to sick and poor patients in hospital charity wards, including those in Western Visayas Medical Center and West Visayas State University Medical Center.

Argamosa said Pope Francis' upcoming visit has energized an ongoing effort to rehabilitate St. Vincent Ferrer Parish School in Batad.

Super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) had flattened the school when it pounded the Visayas in November 2013.  Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
