BUT NO TOTAL CLOSURE

22 establishments closed for El Nido, Palawan rehab —DENR

Twenty-two establishments in El Nido, Palawan have been closed as part of the ongoing rehabilitation efforts of the local government, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

In Glen Juego's report on Super Radyo dzBB, Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said that 70 percent of the informal settlements located near the tourist spots have also already been demolished by their occupants.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, however, clarified that El Nido will not undergo a total closure like that of Boracay.

Studies on limiting the number of tourists are being undertaken to resolve the issue of overcrowding at the tourist destination, which is also known for its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and majestic backdrop of landscapes.

The DENR said it will work with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Interior Local Government (DILG) to fast-track the rehabilitation of El Nido. — Dona Magsino/MDM, GMA News
