Koko Nograles may take over brother Karlo’s legislative district — Andaya

PBA party-list Representative Jericho "Koko" Nograles may take over the first legislative district of Davao City following the appointment of his brother Karlo as Cabinet Secretary.

House Majority Leader Rolando Andaya made the remark on Monday, a week after Karlo took oath to the position that Leoncio "Jun" Evasco Jr. vacated.

According to Andaya, Karlo should be consulted on who should replace him.

"The opinion of Secretary Karlo will carry much weight. He has to be consulted because it is the district that he and his father have represented for about 20 years," he said.

"It can be his brother, who is also a member of Congress," he added.

Before being appointed Cabinet Secretary, Karlo headed the House Committee on Appropriations, which is tasked to tackle the annual national budget, among others.

Andaya, however, has yet to say who will now serve as chair of the appropriations panel, as there are "many worthy replacements."

"There are many vice chairmen in the committee who can step up to the bat, provide continuity, who have the institutional memory in budget taking that there will be no disruption in the work of the committee," he said.

"The new appropriations chair will be announced soon," he added.

Banking on his previous role as appropriations panel chair, Karlo said he hopes to contribute to achieving the Duterte administration's development agenda in being the new Cabinet Secretary.

"As a fellow Mindanaoan and kapwa probinsyano, I hope to contribute to government efforts to bring development to the regions through different programs that place an emphasis on providing more economic opportunities outside Metro Manila,” he said.
