DILG to file cases this week vs. barangay execs who failed to organize anti-drug abuse councils

In fulfillment of earlier pronouncements, Interior and Local Government Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya announced Monday that cases will be filed this week against barangay officials who failed to execute a Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council.

"Ifa-file po namin ito sa Ombudsman, malapit lang naman. Sasampol muna kami," Malaya said during a press briefing at the DILG-NAPOLCOM building in Quezon City.

Though he initially did not mention a specific day, Malaya later said the charges and documents may be prepared for filing by Wednesday and Thursday.

"Magfi-file na kami ng kaso doon sa mga barangay officials who have not organized their BADAC," Malaya said.

Interior Undersecretary Martin Diño and Assistant Secretary Martin Echiverri will file the charges as heads of the task force tasked to handle the cases.

A memorandum ordering all barangays to submit an inventory of and turnover all barangay properties, financial records, documents (BPFRDs), and money accountabilities was previously issued by the DILG.

Further details on the charges will be made available on Wednesday.

Malaya had previously announced that the DILG had plans to put the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency's (PDEA) verified the list of alleged drug personalities on their website.

Barangay candidates with ongoing or new legal cases may still run and campaign in the May 14 polls as only those convicted of crimes of moral turpitude are disqualified from running for public office. — Rie Takumi/RSJ, GMA News
