BSP: Spreading photos of ‘faceless’ bills on social media may affect commerce

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Saturday urged the public to avoid posting photos of "faceless" banknotes on social media.

The BSP said spreading the misprinted notes in social media may "cast doubt on the credibility of our legal tender."

"Posting photos of alleged misprinted banknotes on social media causes confusion which may negatively affect commerce," it added.

The BSP also advised the public against those who intend to deliberately "confuse, deceive or illegal profit from posting, producing and/or selling fake misprinted notes with no numismatic value."

It said the misprinted banknotes should be immediately turned over to its head office in Manila, the Security Plant Complex in Quezon and any of its regional branches for authentication.

The BSP provided contact numbers for its offices, where people may inquire on how to return or replace the faceless banknotes.

Contact numbers and addresses of the BSP's regional offices and branches are available at its website.

"The BSP assures the public that it is, and has, always been committed to safeguarding the authenticity and genuineness of our currency and to protecting the public interest,” it said.

A day before Christmas, netizen Earl Anne Yehey posted on social media pictures of P100 bills which did not have the face of the late President Manuel Roxas on them. The bills allegedly came out of an automated teller machine (ATM).
