Infographic: Power on and off in Mindanao

Rotating power outages have been occurring in Mindanao since 2010 when an El Niño parched the region. The capacity of hydro-powered plants, which provide the bulk of energy in the country's southern third, plummeted. Three years on, many areas in Mindanao (see list of rotating brownouts here) still suffer long brownouts, as the regional grid grapples with summertime low water levels in dams, lowering the output of hydro-powered plants. Weaker power generation is coupled with spiking demand for electricity because of the summer heat and a growth in industrial and commercial activity in a vibrant economy.
