Ramon Ang welcomes temporary closure of Boracay, wants more areas in Aklan developed
San Miguel Corporation (SMC)—the operator of Boracay Airport in Caticlan—on Thursday welcomed the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to close down the island for six months, but called on nearby areas to step up and accommodate more tourists.
"The development of neighboring areas would boost Aklan's economy as a whole, while keeping the island of Boracay sustainable for generations to come," SMC President Ramon Ang said in an emailed statement.
His remarks come after President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday approved the recommendation to close the island of Boracay for six months starting April 26 to make way for its rehabilitation.
The recommendation was made by the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Tourism (DOT) last month after Duterte threatened to close down the island he had described as a "cesspool."
"Addressing long-standing problems with sewage and solid wastes brought about by rapid growth of tourism, commerce and unfettered development now, is critical to ensuring Boracay's long-term sustainability," Ang said.
“The island needs to be rehabilitated and we have to support the government. Yes, we will endure some short-term pain but it’s a step in the right direction and in end we are hopeful it would bring about long-term gain for all,” he added.
Ang also proposed that the government look into the possibility of building a bridge that would connect Caticlan, Aklan to Boracay island.
"Tourists and visitors will have the option to go to Boracay during the day and in the afternoon or at night for accommodations outside the island," he said. — BM, GMA News
