Electricity rates down in June –Meralco

Customers of Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will once again be greeted by cheaper electricity rates this month, reflecting the refund ordered by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

In an emailed statement, Meralco said it will cut down electricity rates by P1.43 per kilowatt hour (kWh), bringing down the overall rate to P8.17 per kWh from last month's P9.60 per kWh.

"The rate decrease this month amounts to a P285-decrease in the total bill of a typical residential household consuming 200kWh," it said.

According to the company, the June rate reflects the refund of over-recovery on charges from January 2014 to December 2016 totaling around P6.9 billion.

"The refund will not be a separate line item in the bill but will be embedded in the different pass-through charges indicated in the bill," Meralco said.

Aside from the refund, Meralco said the decrease is also due to the decline in generation charges.

"Overall generation charge decreased this June by P1.0253 per kWh, from P4.8839 per kWh in May to P3.8586 per kWh for this month," it said. —KBK, GMA News
