San Miguel wants SLEX extended to Tagaytay

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) on Monday confirmed that it has submitted an unsolicited proposal to extend the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) from Batangas to Tagaytay City in Cavite.

"San Miguel Corporation, thru South Luzon Tollway Corporation, submitted an unsolicited proposal, received by the Department of Transportation on February 27, 2017, for the construction of an alternative 29-kilometer tollroad referred to as the Tanauan-Tagaytay Expressway," it said in a filing on the local stock exchange.

According to SMC, the expressway will be an extension of the SLEX from Tanauan City in Batangas to Tagaytay City in Cavite.

It will likewise pass through the municipalities of Silang, Amadeo, and Indang, also in Cavite City.

"Based on the design of the proposed toll road, the same shall have five interchange locations providing entry and exit access to the SLEX," SMC said.

The five interchange locations will be the SLEX Interchange, Calamba-Tagaytay Road, Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Road, General Emilio Aguinaldo Highway, and the Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway.

The proposal was already submitted for the consideration of the Department of Transportation, but did not contain an estimate of the costs for the construction.

Under the current administration, private companies are encouraged to submit unsolicited proposals, subject to a Swiss Challenge — the method which entails inviting other firms to make competing offers, while giving the original proponent the right to match.

Another firm, Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), was earlier reported to have expressed intent to submit an unsolicited proposal for the Cavite-Tagaytay-Batangas Expressway.

Aside from the expressway, SMC late last month said it will also submit an unsolicited proposal for a $2-billion spillway project which is seen to solve the flooding in Metro Manila. —Jon Viktor Cabuenas/KG, GMA News
