Brigada: A heated debate in Baguio City over parking in parks
The TPLEX has made the summer capital of the Philippines easier to reach for those who want to seek refuge from the scorching weather in Metro Manila, but the heavy vehicular traffic from Kennon Road all the way to the city proper would fire up anyone's temper.
Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan says the lack of parking spaces contributes to the heavy traffic clogging the city's streets.
To address the problem, the city government has welcomed a new proposal to construct a parking facility in the 32-hectare Burnham Park—specifically at the Melvin Jones Grandstand, the largest open space—to accommodate close to 3,000 vehicles at a given time.
However, a petition has been launched by heritage conservationists aiming to gather 15,000 signatures opposing the plan, citing its negative impact on the environment.
According to Baguio Heritage Foundation, Inc. chairman Dr. Ronaldo Paraan, Burnham Park is more than just a green area. It also serves as an aquifer, as well as a carbon sink for Baguio's central business district. Moreover, in April this year, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines recognized the national historical significance of Burnham Park.
