Fashion magazine Preview reports the immaculate gown was made by Pitoy Moreno. “The story goes that Rita received news of her 1962 Best Actress nomination while filming a movie called Cry of Bataan in the Philippines, and pitoy whipped the decadent black-and-gold creation up for her in record time,” writes Yanna Lopez on the Preview website.

Vanity Fair meanwhile reports Rita told Ryan Seacrest during the E! broadcast that she “would think it would tarnish! I had no idea I was going to win, I was sure it was going to be Judy Garland for Judgment At Nuremberg. I flew in from Manila in the Philippines just in case, which is where this gown was made.”
Maya Salam writes on New York Times what Rita said of the dress: "the skirt was made from a single piece of obi fabric, which is traditionally used to construct kimonos."
