Joey Samson reworks the basics at the Red Charity Gala 2017
Think basic is an insult? Let Joey Samson change your mind.
The noted fashion designer launched a new collection at the 9th edition of the Red Charity Gala on Saturday and he made a case for old wardrobe favorites under the theme "PilgrimAge."
The show was indeed a journey. The generous attendees were transported to a cathedral and the ghosts of garments past took the stage—hauntingly ethereal now, thanks to Samson's inspired reworking.
Prior to the show, Samson was quoted as saying that his intention was to create a revival of these traditional ensembles, "as if relics of a long passage" but with "a sense of familiarity."
True enough, the creation of something new with recognizable patterns and fabric was a lesson in perspective. Samson finds new beauty in everyday wear.
Samson originally aspired to become a doctor, but instead took a plunge and pursued a career in fashion after graduating with a pre-medicine degree. He studied at the Slim's Fahion and Art School and subsequently apprenticed under renowned designer Jojie Lloren.
He has received numerous accolades, including Menswear Designer of the Year at the 2007 Mega Fashion Awards.
The Red Charity Gala is organized by Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Kaye Tinga. This edition is done in partnership with Bench, as part of the brand's 30th anniversary.
Dennis Lustico, Furne One, Michael Cinco, Cary Santiago, Ezra Santos, Jojie Lloren, Lesley Mobo, and Chito Vijandre were previously featured on the Red Charity Gala stage.
Prior to the show, Prieto-Valdes with the help of Tim Yap auctioned luxury items, the proceeds of which go to the Philippine Red Cross and the Assumption High School Batch 1981 Foundation. — LA, GMA News
