How to take a clearer selfie

The Philippines is known to generate a lot of selfies, thanks to a study by TIME Magazine in 2014 that collectively dubbed Makati City and Pasig City as the “Selfie Capital of the World.” The feat came shortly after Oxford Dictionaries named the social media term for self-portrait as its word of the year in 2013.

Fast forward to 2017, Filipinos are still avid selfie takers. Go to a mall or a park and you may just see at least one person stretching his arm, smartphone in hand, striking a pose with his thumb clicking on the shutter button. With all the years that passed, however, most people have, more or less, learned to master the selfie. If you think you haven’t yet, here are some helpful tips to consider before taking a picture of yourself:

Adjust to the right angle

If there’s one thing to remember before taking a selfie, it’s finding the right angle. The best one, arguably, is to keep your smartphone slightly above your eyes. Doing so will give you a more appealing and tighter look on the frame.

Two things to take note of when trying to find the right angle: 1. don’t hold your smartphone way above your head and 2. never take a photo from below your chin. Those angles are guaranteed to make you appear unflattering.

Celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose tells allure exposing your side profile can help highlight your best features, “Most people don’t look their best straight-on. Turn to the side a little bit — not to the point where it’s a full-on profile, but just slightly.”

Act natural

So you’re taking a selfie, what should your facial expression be?

It all depends on you, really. It’s good to experiment with your looks, but looking natural can yield the best results. Think of a positive moment before snapping a photo or better yet, as Cosmopolitan advises, blow air through your lips to avoid looking tense in the shot.

Look for natural light

When it comes to lighting, the rule of thumb in taking selfies is the same as taking a regular photo: use natural light. The Verge writes, natural light “brightens your face and minimizes shadows.” To do so, simply find a position where sunlight can reach you.

Artificial light such as your smartphone’s flash or fluorescent light can give off a harsh texture, so you may want to avoid using that for your selfie.
