Michelle Gumabao looks forward to the 'hard work and discipline' that comes with winning a crown

Volleyball star Michelle Gumabao is joining a different competition this year but the attitude and lessons she has learned playing volleyball remain the same.

In her introduction video for Binibining Pilipinas 2018, Gumabao said she isn't looking after the "glitz and glamour" that come with winning a crown. Instead, she's looking forward to the hard work and discipline — things she's well-versed with as a professional athlete.

"I'm actually looking forward to the work, I'm actually looking forward to the things behind winning the crown; the hardwork, the discipline, the job in itself because that's what I'm used to," Gumabao said in the video.

It might be a different type of competition, but Gumabao said she'll hone her skills the way she's done with volleyball.

"I train every single day and I try to improve my talent every single day with volleyball and that's what I want to do when I win a crown," she said.

Aside from training, Gumabao is also anticipating being more capable of helping and inspiring people as a beauty queen.

"I'm looking forward to the charities the people that we're gonna help. We're gonna inspire because that's the meaning of being a beauty queen is to inspire people, to help people and actually give your life to other people hoping that you can help someone out even just one person and that's a big thing," Gumabao said.

Even before joining pageant Gumabao has already set up an organization that helps kids in the sport; she started the Michelle Gumabao Volleyball Camp in 2012.

Gumabao believes that being a beauty queen will give her a bigger chance to be heard.

"I've been doing that in Volleyball but being a beauty queen is something bigger, something more powerful, you have a greater voice and a louder voice." — LA, GMA News
