Did you know? The so-called 'Pambansang Kumot' is not from the Philippines

Remember those blankets with white and colored stripes and flower prints ? Every Filipino household seems to have them, leading them to be called the "Pambansang Kumot."

Contrary to public knowledge, however, this blanket is not actually from the Philippines.

According to Kuya Kim on "24 Oras," Thursday, it's actually from Malaysia and it's called Selimut Lejen which means "legendary blanket."

The fabric is called Malaysian Batik which comes from Malaysia's East Coast. According to Dr. Chester Cabalza, an anthropologist, their favorite theme is flowers with leaves which symbolizes prosperity.

Meanwhile, one product that is truly Filipino is the T'nalak which is hand-woven by T'boli women from South Cotabato. It is made with abaca fiber.

Those who make it are called dream weavers because their designs are said to come from their dreams, which they believe are gifts from Fu Dalu, the T'boli's abaca goddess.
