Niyogyugan Festival celebrates Quezon’s rich coconut bounty
For Filipinos, the coconut tree is the tree of life. This is especially the case in Quezon province, where coconut is one of the dominant crops. On Saturday, young Quezonians from different high schools in the province took part in a parade celebrating the niyog.
The aptly called Niyogyugan Festival—a combination of the words "niyog" and "yugyog"—aims to shine the spotlight on the coconut and coconut products, which have been the main source of income for many Quezonians since the early part of the century. It also aims to “shake” the industry by featuring the province's culture and traditions, and how the coconut tree affects the life of a typical Quezonian.
Quezon hopes that the Niyogyugan Festival, which only began in 2012, will become a major event on the country's calendar of festivals. — BM, GMA News
