James and Gina Wright are one of the mom-and-son tandems competing in Anak Ko ‘Yan, GMA’s newest reality talent search.

“To fulfill his dreams,” was Mommy Gina’s straight-to-the-point answer when asked how son James persuaded her to literally pack their bags and fly all the way from Hong Kong to try their luck on this show.

Performing as an actor was James’ life-long dream but his parents wanted him to prioritize his education first. “I actually wanted to come here two years ago, and just drop out of school and do everything. Pero my parents said, wag, just complete high school first para if it all fails, meron pa,” James confided. At 17, he’s one of the oldest contestants of the show.

Singing will be James’ advantage over the other contestants. Mommy Gina recalled him singing as young as three years old. “Lahat ng mahawakan n’ya ginagawa n’yang microphone tapos kakanta sya. Tapos sa TV, every time na may makikita s’yang musical, kumakanta sya. Tapos pag nakakalungkot yung pinapanood nya, umiiyak naman sya. Sabi ko, pwedeng artista ‘to,” Mommy Gina mused.

James was more inclined to the jazz genre, but was willing to adapt to the current Filipino music scene. “There’s this RnB thing going on in the Philippines and it’s really big. From jazz to RnB it’s sort of the same so I guess I could do it. But ‘yung plan ko is not to change who I am and my style. Just sort of tell other people that this style is also good,” James said with high hopes.

James was dubbed as “The Heartthrob” for obvious reasons. His mom’s morena genes mixed well with those of his Australian Dad. While he shyly admitted that he was aware of his boyish good looks, he knew his face alone could not bring him to the top. “My mom told me don’t stick your head in the clouds. Don’t think that just because you’re a heartthrob, everyone loves you. You have to perform. It’s just a title,” James humbly explained.

Mommy Gina was dubbed as “The Survivor” because she survived breast cancer after she was diagnosed positive four years ago. “Ok naman ako ngayon. Very healthy. I’m a survivor,” said Mommy Gina.

Having met the other contestants, both James and Mommy Gina agreed that the younger competitors cannot be belittled. “Madaming talented na mga kids so we have to work on it. Not to be too confident,” according to Mommy Gina who was a school teacher back in Hong Kong.

But as with all the challenges and life that they conquered together, they knew that as long as they stick together, they can do it. “It’s a dream, we’ll keep going. Parang Olympics yan eh. We’ll keep on going. Nothing will stop us,” Mommy Gina assured her son.
