GMA Network posts strong start in 2015, leads in nationwide ratings

GMA Network emerged as the country’s number one TV network in the month of January, according to data from the industry's widely-trusted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.
 
Compared to the previous month, GMA significantly increased its household audience shares across all timeblocks including primetime in NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement), driving its dominance over rival networks. 
 
For the period January 1 to 31 (with the dates of January 25 to 31 based on overnight data) GMA recorded a 34.9 percent total day average in NUTAM, higher than ABS-CBN's 32.8 percent by 2.1 points and TV5’s 11.2 percent by 23.7 points. 
 
GMA continued to prevail in the morning block, where it scored 34.2 percent, ahead of ABS-CBN's 29.9 percent by 4.3 points and of TV5's 11.3 percent by 22.9 points. GMA also led competition in the afternoon block with a commanding 36.9 percent, up 7.9 points from ABS-CBN's 29 percent and up 24.4 points from TV5's 12.5 percent.
 
GMA increased its primetime audience share over the prior month by 1.6 points to 33.8 percent in January, while ABS-CBN's primetime audience share dropped 2.6 points.
 
Leading across all dayparts, the Kapuso Network still remained as the undisputed ratings leader in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, which respectively account for 77 and 59 percent of all urban TV households in the country, with wider share leads over its competitors. 
 
In Urban Luzon, GMA's total day audience share reached 39.3 percent, leading ABS-CBN's 29 percent by 10.3 points and TV5's 9.6 percent by 29.7 points. GMA posted an even bigger margin in its bailiwick Mega Manila with a 41.1 percent average, much higher than ABS-CBN's 25.7 percent by 15.4 points and TV5's 10 percent by 31.1 points.
 
Furthermore, GMA dominated the list of 30 top-rating programs (with and without specials) in overall NUTAM, Urban Luzon and particularly Mega Manila, where all programs in the top 10 came from GMA.
 
Among regular programs, Magpakailanman, GMA’s weekly drama anthology, took the number one spot in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, and led the list of Kapuso shows in NUTAM. Other ratings drivers for January include multi-awarded news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Kapuso Movie Night, flagship newscast 24 Oras, weekend top-raters Pepito Manaloto and Ismol Family, recently-concluded primetime soap Strawberry Lane, the country’s highest-rating daytime drama today The Half Sisters, Kapuso Movie Festival, weeknight drama More Than Words, and newly launched primetime program Once Upon A Kiss.  
 
Meanwhile, the Dingdong and Marian Wedding Special: The Ceremony topped all specials in January. 
 
More viewers also tuned in to GMA’s coverage of Pope Francis’ five-day apostolic and state visit to the Philippines from January 15 to 19 as it garnered a 15.2 percent average rating in NUTAM versus ABS-CBN’s 11.7 percent. The Kapuso special coverage dubbed “Ang People’s Pope sa Pilipinas” also posted bigger share leads in Urban Luzon and Mega Manila against competition.
 
GMA subscribes to the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement service, while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.
 
Nielsen data is gathered through a greater number of sampled homes nationwide in comparison to Kantar Media.
